Why We Started in Madhya Pradesh

An important production system, under real pressure.

Madhya Pradesh already ranks among India's leading agricultural states - which is exactly why
what happens to its land matters at national scale.

Land use in Madhya Pradesh (2017–18):
0% Net sown
0% Forest
0% Not available
for cultivation
0% Other
uncultivated
0% Fallow

This is where RPLC's journey
in Madhya Pradesh began.

Over the years, agriculture in Madhya Pradesh has witnessed a shift from being traditional, multi-cropping, and regenerative to being intensive, mono-cropping, and extractive!

0%+

of land faces severe soil erosion risk; nearly 70% needs restoration.

0%

of farmers still rely on conventional practices, driving excessive chemical use.

Activities Across the Landscape

Not one intervention, but several, working together — across local governance, government
finance, and the field itself.

Demonstration Plots

Geo-tagged farm plots set up by lead farmer for live demonstration of regen ag practices

0+ plots developed

Bio Input/ Biochar Units

Market Linkages

Enabling market access and premium off-take partnerships for sustainably produced regenerative crops

0+ buyer partnerships active

Progress We Can Verify

Treatment households (in the programme) tracked against control households (not yet reached) —
the gap between them is what RPLC can actually claim credit for.

Changes from the Baseline to Midline
  • 24% percentage increase in the cropping intensity
  • Increase the Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) in the landscape
Serial Number Indicators Baseline Midline Endline Targets
1 Increase sustainable cropping intensity in the landscape 139% 163% - 160%
2 Increase the yield of focussed crops grown in the landscape Current Yields Current Yields - 25%
3 Increase the Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) in the landscape 0.70% 0.62% - 1.10%
4 Reduce the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions from agricultural production Current GHG Emission in Crops At the midline for all the blocks in the two districts - Reduce the GHG Emission by 10%
Serial Number Indicators Baseline Midline Endline Targets
1 Increase sustainable cropping intensity in Western MP Compact 132% 158% - 160%
2 Increase crop yields across key production clusters Current Yields Current Yields - 25%
3 Increase Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) across targeted blocks 0.68% 0.65% - 1.10%
4 Reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions in agricultural landscape Current GHG Emission Midline evaluated across clusters - Reduce the GHG Emission by 10%

*Cropping intensity measured as actual intensity %, not % of households — footnoted separately in the source.

LANDSCAPE COMPACT VILLAGE PLOT Regenerative Usual practice
LEVEL 2 OF 4: VILLAGE

Where farmers see it work

Neighbours follow the plot through the season and judge the results for themselves.

Local. Regenerative practice is local. What works in one village or soil may need changing in another.
Seeing before committing. The plot makes change visible while it happens, so farmers can decide before they commit their own fields.
Learning together. Field days at key crop stages bring farmers to both halves of the plot to compare, ask questions and learn from one another.
Choosing what to adopt. Farmers who take up a practice on their own fields are recorded, so adoption can be followed season by season.
WHAT WE TRACK
Field days held Farmers visiting Practices adopted Farmer feedback

Adoption records show how practices spread from one plot across the village.

How plot data travels

From one field to the whole landscape, through our MRV framework

Record

Plot and farm data are captured in the field, including soil tests and photos.

Check

Records are reviewed by partners and confirmed with farmers.

Compare

Results are compared with starting points and across plots.

Report

Findings are reported through the MRV framework across the landscape.

Trace

Produce carries a record from the field to the buyer.
